#PlasticFreeOceans: Sea Clean-Up
At Bluewave Alliance, we recognise that the Mediterranean is the most plastic-polluted sea in the world. That’s why we have teamed up with The Gravity Wave to fight this threat.

At Bluewave Alliance, we recognise that the Mediterranean is the most plastic-polluted sea in the world. We are taking action alongside The Gravity Wave and collaborating with over 5,000 traditional fishers across the Mediterranean, primarily in Spain, Greece and Italy.
Every day, we remove various types of plastic from the sea, striving to give them a second life. Abandoned fishing nets are particularly problematic, accounting for between 30% and 50% of plastic waste in the ocean. These nets are often neglected by the recycling industry and have dire consequences for marine biodiversity.
Until recently, these nets were left on the seabed, where they can take over 1,000 years to degrade, or they ended up in landfills and incinerators. Through a specialised circular economy process for fishing nets, we transform them into furniture and long-lasting products. Each year, companies like ISDIN demonstrate their commitment to the Mediterranean by removing tonnes of plastic from the sea, engaging their customers in the process through their activities and products.
Goal
Targeting tonnes of plastic for removal from the Mediterranean in 2024. In 2023, we removed 65 tonnes.
Fishers involved
Over 5,000 fishers are actively participating in plastic removal efforts across the Mediterranean.
Locations
Ports around the Mediterranean are equipped with containers for plastic collection.
