We are committed to enhancing the protection and recovery of Posidonia oceanica meadows in the Balearic Islands, through a comprehensive conservation initiative that focuses on preservation, restoration and raising awareness. This model is designed to be replicated in other areas of the Mediterranean Sea.
Seagrass meadows, like Posidonia, are crucial for maintaining the diversity of marine ecosystems, supporting seabed restoration and protecting the coastline from erosion. They are also essential for producing oxygen and capturing carbon from atmospheric CO₂, playing a key role in mitigating the effects of climate change.
The project, spearheaded by Bluewave Alliance, leads the replanting of Posidonia oceanica using seedlings grown from Posidonia fruits collected from beaches and germinated in their natural environment. It is a collaborative effort involving scientists, volunteers and participants from the Vellmarí Dive Camp educational programme. The project is carried out in close cooperation with scientists from the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

A planting density of 1 Posidonia oceanica seedling per square metre, covering a total area of 7,550 m².
Collection of Fruits, Seeds and Seedlings
Successful rescue efforts have saved 22,038 fruits, seeds and seedlings from areas where they would otherwise have perished, ensuring their survival through replanting.
SEA EXPEDITIONS
A total of 66 successful sea expeditions have been conducted to gather material for replanting efforts.
